- 3 STEPS GET YOU STARTED
-
- 1 Install
- 2 Connect
- 3 Explore
-
- BUT FIRST...
-
- Here's what you need:
-
- - A Macintosh computer with system software version 6.0.8 or
- later-and at least 4 megabytes of RAM
-
- - Between 5 and 7 megabytes of free disk space, depending on the
- type of hard drive on which you are installing (we recommend 7 Mb)
-
- - A modem-2400 bps or faster
-
- - A credit card-VISA, MasterCard, American Express, or
- Discover Card
-
- - The eWorld registration number and password from your
- starter kit-or your eWorld name and password if you're
- already a member
-
- For details, see WHAT HAPPENS WHEN YOU CONNECT below.
-
- STEP 1: INSTALL
-
- 1 Check your hard disk. You may already have the eWorld 1.1
- software. If so, skip to STEP 2: CONNECT.
-
- IF YOU'RE UPGRADING: Make sure you know where your eWorld
- 1.0 folder is on your hard disk. Keep it there until you finish
- installing and connecting.
-
- 2 Restart your computer without any extensions.
-
- For system 7.0 or higher, hold down the shift key while you
- restart to turn off your extensions and virus checking software.
- (Hold the shift key down for the entire restart procedure.)
-
- System 6 users must turn off virus checking in the control
- panel.
-
- 3 Insert eWorld Disk 1 in your floppy disk drive and double-click
- the Installer icon.
-
- 4 Follow the instructions on the screen to install eWorld on
- your hard disk.
-
- 5 Success! Now restart your computer as usual to turn your
- extensions back on.
-
- Not successful? Create a new folder on your hard disk and copy
- the contents of both disks into the folder. Then double-click the
- Installer icon again.
-
- STEP 2: CONNECT
-
- 1 Get your modem ready.
-
- If you have a built-in modem, connect your telephone line
- to your internal modem jack.
-
- If you have an external modem, connect it to the telephone
- line and the modem port on your computer. Then switch it on,
- if necessary.
-
- If you have ANY questions about your modem, see ALL ABOUT
- MODEMS below, or check your modem manual.
-
- 2 Double-click the eWorld icon in the eWorld folder.
-
- 3 Follow the instructions on the screen to choose your modem
- settings, choose a local access phone number, and register
- as a new member.
-
- OR
-
- Click Upgrade to keep all your existing setup information,
- mail messages, and account information.
-
- When you connect the first time, the Access Assistant guides
- you through the setup and registration process, step-by-step.
- If you have any questions or problems, click the Access
- Assistant's Help button for fast answers about each step.
-
- Also check the topics below for tips on modem setups,
- registration numbers, passwords, and eWorld names.
- (You get to choose an on-line name -something fun and whacky
- or something with substance. Your choice.)
-
- STEP 3: EXPLORE
-
- - Click any building in the eWorld Town Square to find out
- what's inside. Or choose a building from the Places menu.
-
- - Click the Info Booth to find out all about eWorld: the how-to's,
- the features, services, and billing information. You can also
- read the eWorld Weekly News in the Info Booth-or have it
- delivered to your mailbox every Friday.
-
- - Click the Community Center to join conferences where you can
- talk about new ideas and make new friends.
-
- - Click eMail Center to send messages to friends and
- colleagues anywhere in the world-and to check your own mail.
-
- - Finished for now? Choose Disconnect from eWorld in the
- Places menu. You can still use the Info Booth, compose
- messages, and do lots of other things after you disconnect.
-
- WHAT HAPPENS WHEN YOU CONNECT
-
- - You tell eWorld about your modem. eWorld needs this
- information to manage the connection. If you're having
- problems, see ALL ABOUT MODEMS below. Most connection
- problems start with the modem. (Your organization may
- have a network with access to eWorld. If you're connected
- directly to that network, you don't need a modem.)
-
- - You choose a local access phone number. This is the number
- your modem dials to connect you to eWorld. You usually choose
- the nearest-and least expensive-number.
-
- - You set up special dialing instructions. For example, you may
- need to dial a special code to get an outside line. Or you may
- need to turn off Call Waiting.
-
- - You register. You enter your registration number and password
- and a credit card number. Your credit card number is kept
- COMPLETELY CONFIDENTIAL. You must provide it to set up your
- personal billing account.
-
- Some registration tips:
- If you don't have a registration number and password-call the
- eWorld Assistance Center to get one FREE. Your friends are
- welcome, too. Give them a copy of your software and ask them
- to call for their own number and password. See Worldwide
- Support Numbers in the Info Booth for the toll-free number
- for your area.
-
- If you're already an eWorld member, you don't need your
- registration number. Just use your eWorld name and password.
-
- Credit card billing is the only payment method available
- right now. You need a major credit card-VISA, MasterCard,
- American Express, or Discover Card-for eWorld registration
- and billing.
-
- When you enter your credit card information, you don't need to
- type spaces. For example:
- Card Number 123456789979
- Expiration Date 0795
-
- eWORLD NAMES
-
- - You get to choose your own on-line name when you join eWorld.
- This is the name others see when you join a conference or send
- a message. It's the name others use when they send a message
- to you. Your eWorld name can be as fun or as serious as you
- want it to be.
-
- - Choose a name with 3 to 12 characters. Avoid special
- characters, like periods or slashes or asterisks. Others will
- remember your name more easily if they can pronounce it.
-
- - If you're sharing your account with others, choose a name that
- works for all of you.
-
- - Once you choose your name, the only way to change it is to
- cancel your account and then open a new one. So choose
- carefully. (You can-and should-change your password often.
- Choose Change Password from the Membership menu.)
-
- - If you're an AppleLink customer, your AppleLink ID has been
- reserved for you. AppleLink customers will soon be using
- eWorld, and you'll be able to use your AppleLink ID then. In
- the meantime, choose another temporary eWorld name.
-
- - Have friends on the Internet? Your Internet address is your
- eWorld name followed by @eworld.com. For example, if your
- eWorld name is HERO, your Internet address is hero@eworld.com.
-
- ALL ABOUT MODEMS
-
- A modem is a go-between. It helps your computer talk over
- a phone line. It may be built into your computer. Or it may
- be an external modem.
- Here are some modem basics:
-
- BUILT-IN OR EXTERNAL
- If you're not sure whether you have a built-in modem, see the
- manual that comes with your computer.
-
- MODEM SPEED
- Check your modem speed. Any modem with a speed of 2400
- bits per second (bps) or more will probably work with eWorld.
- But to save time and money, use a modem with a speed of at
- least 9600 bps.
-
- eWorld can currently connect at speeds up to 14400 (14.4K) bps
- if your modem supports hardware handshaking. Otherwise, the
- top speed is 9600 bps. See below for details.
-
- When you choose an access number, choose one that matches
- your highest modem speed, up to 14.4K bps.
-
- THE PHONE CONNECTION
- If you have a built-in modem:
- Connect a standard phone line directly from the computer
- to the phone jack.
-
- If you have an external modem:
- Connect the modem to the computer. You usually plug
- the modem cable into the modem port on your computer.
- (It has a telephone icon.) Remember which port you use.
- You need to tell eWorld when you connect the first time.
-
- Then plug a telephone line into the phone jack on your modem.
- The phone jack may be labeled "Wall," or it may have a phone
- jack icon. If your modem has two phone jacks, it may have both
- a phone jack icon and a telephone icon. Use the jack with the
- phone jack icon, not the telephone icon. See your modem
- manual for details.
-
- MODEM TYPE
- eWorld works with most standard modems. But it uses different
- settings for different types of modems. So you need to tell
- eWorld which modem type you're using.
-
- eWorld gives you a list to choose from. If you don't see your
- type in the list, try one of the following types:
-
- Generic Modem
- Hayes Optima/Ultra
-
- If neither of these settings works, contact the eWorld
- Assistance Center. Click Worldwide Support Numbers in the
- Info Booth for the toll-free number for your area.
-
- DO YOU HAVE ONE OF THESE MODEM SETUPS?
-
- - Express modem and PowerPort
- Before you connect, open your modem control panel, set the
- modem to ON, and choose Internal Modem. (If you have System
- 7.5, you need Express Modem software version 1.5.4.)
-
- - Global Village Bronze 24/96
- The highest speed you can use to connect to eWorld is 2400 bps.
- (The 96 refers to 9600 FAX communications.) Be sure to select
- a 2400 bps access number.
-
- - Performa and Global Village Teleport Gold II
- Always set the connection speed to 19200. Your modem won't
- actually connect at 19200 bps-it will match the speed of the
- access phone number you're using.
-
- - MultiTech modem
- If you have a modem in the MultiTech 1432 or ZDX family, you
- need a hardware handshake cable to use eWorld. You also need
- to turn on hardware handshaking in the Advanced Options window.
- Click Edit Local Setup in the Connect to eWorld window and then
- click Advanced Options.
-
- - GeoPort modem
- Be sure to select GeoPort as your port. You can select the port
- when you first connect or you can click Edit Local Setup in the
- Connect to eWorld window to change your port.
-
- If you have a PowerMac computer, you need GeoPort for PowerMac
- software version 1.0.2 or above.
-
- If you have a Macintosh AV computer, you need GeoPort software
- version 1.2.2 or above.
-
- Contact the eWorld Assistance Center if you need this software.
- Click Worldwide Support Numbers in the Info Booth for the
- toll-free number for your area.
-
- - A 14.4K bps modem
- Unless you have an internal modem, you need a hardware
- handshake cable. In all cases, the hardware handshaking
- option must be ON to connect at 14.4K bps. This option is
- already ON when the manufacturer ships the modem with
- a hardware cable. (To set it yourself, click Edit Local Setup
- in the Connect to eWorld window, choose Advanced Options,
- and then enter the modem command for Hardware Handshake.
- See your modem manual for details.)
-
- If you don't have a hardware handshake cable, the highest modem
- speed you can use is 9600 bps. You can set this speed when you
- first connect or by clicking Edit Local Setup in the Connect to
- eWorld window.
-
- SPECIAL MODEM INFORMATION
- To find out details about your modem, click Edit Local Setup in
- the Connect to eWorld window. Choose your modem type from the
- Modem Type pop-up menu and click Advanced Options. Then click
- Modem Info in the Advanced Options window. The Modem Info
- window often has special tips for individual modems.
-
- TIPS
-
- DON'T REMOVE THE eWORLD COLOR ART FILE
- Even though you may not have a color display, you need this file.
-
- DO INSTALL THE eWORLD FONTS
- You need these fonts to use eWorld:
-
- Monaco 12
- Palatino 12, 18, 30
- Espy Sans 9, 10, 12
- Espy Sans Bold 9, 10, 12
- eWorld Tight 18
-
- The Palatino fonts are TrueType fonts, not Adobe Type 1 fonts.
-
- These fonts are normally installed automatically when you
- install eWorld. If you have removed them or didn't install them
- initially, you can use the Custom Install option in the eWorld
- Installer to install them now.
-
- STUCK WITH A SPINNING 'e'?
- If the network doesn't connect, you can type Command-Period.
- (Hold down the Command or Apple key and the period (.) at the
- same time.) You may need to click Edit Local Setup in the Connect
- to eWorld window to change your phone or modem settings.
-
- INSTALLING ON MORE THAN ONE COMPUTER?
- When you install eWorld on a second or third computer, you
- follow the same steps as the first time-until you get to
- registration. Then you use your eWorld name and password
- instead of your original registration number and password.
-
- GETTING HELP
-
- CLICK THE HELP BUTTON.
- The Access Assistant has help for each step as you set up and
- register. After you connect, use the Help button if you have a
- question about the window you're in.
-
- CHECK THE INFO BOOTH.
- The Info Booth is always available-whether you're connected
- or not.
-
- When you first start eWorld, the Access Assistant automatically
- starts the registration process. If you need to go to the Info
- Booth before you register, click Cancel. The Info Booth then
- appears in the Connect to eWorld window. (If this window isn't
- open, choose Connect to eWorld from the Places menu.)
-
- After you connect, the Info Booth is available in the Town Square.
- Choose Town Square from the Places menu to see it.
-
- CALL FOR HELP
- If you can't find the answers you need in the Info Booth, contact
- the eWorld Assistance Center. Click Worldwide Support Numbers
- in the Info Booth for the toll-free number for your area.
